Community Justice Learning

Training and accreditation for UK Probation Officers

The Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth is contracted by the Ministry of Justice to deliver the academic component to Probation Officer training in the National Probation Service divisions in England and Wales indicated below. This training comprises a programme of part-time academic study integrated with work-based learning that leads to either a Diploma of Higher Education in Community Justice (DipHE) or a BA (Hons) in Community Justice.

The following Services and Teaching and Learning are available to individuals who are interested in the various aspects of community justice learning:

Level 4 Modules

The Level 4 Modules are available for those learners who have a Level 3 Vocational  Qualification in Community  Justice or equivalent. Successful  completion of  the level 4 modules form the Probation Preparation Certificate at the University of Portsmouth, for preparation to the Level 5 Diploma of HE in Community Justice Award . Applications are through your NPS Divisional Training Manager or your Community Rehabilitation Company.

Level 5 DipHE in Community Justice

The Diploma of Higher Education is a twelve-month Level 5 award for those learners who  already have a Level  4 Higher Education award or who have completed the Level  4 modules in the Probation Preparation Certificate.

Applications are through your NPS Divisional Training Manager or Community Rehabilitation Company. If you are interested in a self-funded diploma, please contact cjl@port.ac.uk for more information.

Level 5 Required Knowledge Modules

The 4 knowledge modules are offered for those with a level 5 Higher Education award which has not covered the Criminal Justice system , Penal policy  and Punishment,  Crime and Criminal Behaviour and rehabilitation in their previous study. Successful completion of  all four knowledge modules achieves the Certificate in Probation Knowledge from the University of Portsmouth.

Gateway Assessment Service to Level 6 (PQiP) award

The Gateway Assessment Service (GAS) verifies that  the applicant has the required academic study  including previous study  of the subjects which  make up  the knowledge modules prior to  their application for the level  6 PQIP. If you would like to  have your previous study accredited and verified or find out which  knowledge modules you need to undertake then apply to  the Gateway  Assessment  Service.

The University of Portsmouth is contracted to deliver all aspects of the Community Justice Learning framework in the following Probation Divisions:
